Welcome to Zamar Music
Zamar Music began in September 2016 with a simple conviction: quality music education should be within reach of every family, and the musicians our community needs can be raised up from within it.
Ten years on, Zamar Music Inc. is a registered charity and Brampton’s community music hub, serving more than 250 families every week and more than 200 seniors every month. Our 3,000 sq. ft. accessible home on Van Kirk Drive brings The Academy and our wellness programs under one roof, with The Studio’s recording space opening in Phase 2. Our programming is rooted in Black, Afro-Caribbean, South Asian and Western classical traditions.
Our docu-concerts have drawn audiences of up to 800 at the Rose Theatre and stages across the GTA, with our own students performing beside professional artists and orchestra. Our seniors’ choir sang its way from a first rehearsal to a December showcase. And our new home was made possible with support from our families, the Lewitt Family Foundation, the City of Brampton and the Region of Peel.

Our Founder
Corey Butler is a composer, producer and educator who founded Zamar Music in 2016. A Music Professor at York University for 19 years, he created and teaches the York University Gospel Ensemble and serves as Musical Director of the York University Gospel Choir. He holds an MA in Composition from York and is a co-recipient of the 2026 Kathleen McMorrow Music Award from the Ontario Arts Foundation.
Corey’s works have been performed at the Rose Theatre, Roy Thomson Hall and the St. Lawrence Centre. He was Musical Director of the award-winning Toronto Mass Choir for 11 years, producing four of its recordings; has been Music Director for many of The Nathaniel Dett Chorale’s concert productions since 2015; has collaborated with artists including Carvin Winans; and chairs the JUNO Awards’ Contemporary Christian/Gospel Recording of the Year category. “Raising up from within” has been his mantra throughout.
